It is Tuesday night here in the Czech Republic and I am at the home of Tomas and Hanka Polivka, missionaries we support in Klacany where they are planting a church. We just returned from a delightful meal at a new restaurant in their village called “Farm Table.” One of the best things about being in the Czech Republic is that there is a lot of walking, so while the one mile walk there was nice the one mile walk home was a perfect finish to a wonderful meal.
My time here has been very good so far and I have some great days in front of me as well. The Men’s Retreat this past weekend (Friday – Sunday) was fantastic. We were at the same 12th century castle we have been at for the past two years. It snowed the entire time we were there. Not enough to be disruptive but a light snow the entire weekend. Thirty men were there and we talked all weekend about what it means to follow Jesus in community. I used Luke 24:13-35 as my guide. This year was a little different in that I did not teach and then send them off to small group discussion but I would teach for about ten minutes and then allow them to discuss for ten minutes. Then I would teach again and they would talk again. It was a bit of a risk because I do not always know exactly how the groups are going (there is a language gap as you might expect) but it seemed to work very well. After the retreat was over at noon on Sunday, about half of the men stayed for another two hours continuing their discussions.
On Monday I spent about six hours with David Zivor, another one of our missionaries who we support. David came to Christ through our English partnership with Vinohrady Church in Prague way back in 2004. It was great to be able to hear how David’s ministry is growing and how hard he is working. David is an excellent teacher and he is very thoughtful about building his team and reaching the community in Repy (a suburb of Prague). I was so inspired. I will be preaching for him on Sunday evening.
I ate dinner with Mary Stenpenkova (Meistekova) and her husband Karl and baby Kia. Mary was a central partner in the Prague youth group for years. I was supposed to just eat dinner with them but we ended up talking so late that I did not get back to Klacany until 10:45PM.
Today I rested a bit (trying to get over a cold) and prepared my message for Sunday in Repy where I am continuing a series for David on 2 Thessalonians. Tomorrow I head to Pardubice for a couple of days to meet with the leadership and youth from the church we partner with to do English Camps in the summer. Friday and Saturday will be a counseling conference in Prague and then preaching a few times on Sunday. I will meet in the morning with Sasha Fleck (a leader in the Christian Community here) and then have lunch with Pavel Mckovsky who leads a men’s ministry in Moravia where I have spoken many time before.
Please pray that all of my interactions would be an encouragement to the people I get to interact with while I am here. I love being here and this is a great opportunity to invest, equip, and encourage believers in this beautiful land.
