There have been many great men and women who God has used mightily throughout history. I am a lover of reading, thinking and sometimes arguing so I have been able to soak in many quotes that helped changed the way I see God’s Word and His mission. None of those as clearly as D.A. Carson’ words from his book “For the Love of God”
“People do not drift toward Holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated.”
― D.A. Carson
Such strong words but ones that I think any mature Christian would find difficult to counter. So my question is this, are you drifting? Are you drifting in your marriage? Are you drifting with your children? Are you drifting with your time with your savior? Are you drifting with God’s mission? If so, I can guarantee when you awake from this nap you will not like where you have ended up. Stop drifting. Start swimming toward your savior. Begging Him to change you. Begging Him to make you more intentional about your walk, family and mission. Begging Him to make you more like Him.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prizefor which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14
